I made a huge mistake in making Microsoft/Redmond corporation and coming out with Windows. i don’t even use the shit vista OS that came out because every one of those idiots that were hired here all put holes and bug in the system which lead to crashes and zero day viruses. Plus the customer support here is horrible.
I suggest that every one switch to a Linux operating system so we can all keep our sanity.
I personally recommended the distribution of Ubuntu.

July 17th, 2007 at 1:18 pm
If you look carefully at the System Properties of the XP screen shot, you’ll notice it’s actually a screen shot from Windows 2000. Did you get a couple of your screen shots swapped?
Oh! And thanks for “forgetting” about ME. I think we’ve all tried to forget that one!
July 17th, 2007 at 1:30 pm
So predictable ….
How many time are people going to reply with “Missing ME” … I think the first one, maybe two times it was commented will suffice. YOU LAME ASSES don’t need to keep commenting the same shit over and over. Now wouldn’t it just sound stupid if I were to say….
“He you forgot Windows ME!”
instead???
And of course, we have the Linux kiddies. It is more than likely all of you that posted a comment like Linux rocks, Linux this, Linux that … have no idea what Linux really is, nor how to properly use it. The simple fact that you use the Ubuntu distro just proves my theory.

Great shots. It only shows how MS really sucks on design and security. The interesting part is, the only thing Microsoft can come up with every release of their windows is just a new “SKIN”. What ever the version is underneath it all is just complete crappy “windows” and “dos” a turtle and its shell.
July 17th, 2007 at 2:35 pm

July 17th, 2007 at 2:45 pm
They forgot ME for a reason, it was the win 98 core with few improvements and bug fixes. plus a shittier interface.
July 17th, 2007 at 2:55 pm
For the love of God, does nobody read the comments before posting? No shit ME was left out, it ate itself before a screenshot could be obtained.
Only notable things left out were the Server releases.

This list is good but it is missing a version – Windows ME.
July 17th, 2007 at 5:40 pm
Wow. Those brought back some memories of fixing my school’s Windows boxes way back in the day! It’s always nice to look back at where we’ve been and extrapolate where we are going.
As with the apparent theme of the comments, I too have an affinity for WinME. It was WinME that provoked me to first look into Linux as an alternative.
July 17th, 2007 at 5:51 pm
Windows ME was Windows 2000 home edition, he didnt list XP home either. If you ever saw the back of a retail 2000 package you would see that they are the same product, the first time microsoft tried to make a home and business product.
July 17th, 2007 at 6:19 pm
?
July 17th, 2007 at 6:45 pm
Jeez, doesn’t anybody read previous comments anymore? How many times do you guys feel the need to repeat “forgot Win ME!”
And just to counter the Linux fans out there who hate Microsoft: remember that Microsoft is one of the last significant on-shore software companies in North America. Sun, Apple, Novell, Yahoo, etc. are huge proponents of outsourcing software development. Even Red Hat outsources most of their custom development work now. Being a software engineer in the U.S. is getting difficult these days, and this is coming from someone with 10 years of industry experience.
Microsoft is *not* the reason you won’t be able to get a job in the U.S. when you graduate. I wish more college students would stop mindlessly bashing Microsoft and stop to think for themselves once in a while. As a wise man probably once said: “Don’t throw poo on a company that wants to pay you well.”
July 17th, 2007 at 9:36 pm

July 17th, 2007 at 11:01 pm
Windows ME was NOT 2000 home. ME was based on Win 9X, which itself ran atop DOS. 2000 was based on NT, and thus had a revised NT Kernel, NTFS file system, and improved security and stability. The only thing they had in common was the look and feel of the interface.
XP home and XP pro come from the same source, albeit with certain functionality only being available in the pro version. XP is in fact a descendant Windows 2000 itself, and thus bare the name NT 5.1 (2000 was NT 5.0).
In my honest opinion, I think 2000 was probably the best OS Windows ever made. It is pretty damn stable, and best of all, has an unobtrusive, eye candy lacking interface, made for just getting work done.
July 17th, 2007 at 11:03 pm
Not to mention Windows 386, probably too long ago for most.

July 18th, 2007 at 8:51 am
Windows ME is not realy left out.
It was put togeather from windows 98 and abit of 2000,
and thus in my opinion unimportant and not a real step up in programming
Could you all please stop whining about windows, “Windows Sucks!!!” or “It the worst operating system ever!!!” , “Why don’t we just move on to linux?!?!?”
Go over to Linux, Its much more stable than windows.
Ohh, but I forgot no self respecting software company writes full and proper software fo linux…. why???
Because the standart is WINDOWS no linux.
Yes I am a programmer, yes I do belive in open soruce, No I didn’t say that Linux is bad or not a good os, it just isn’t put under the stress that windows is put under.
You try flying a flight simulator on linux, in the background have your anti-virus running, with an answering machine for voice and fax, add to that a few other small programmes and see how you linux based system starts to go down.
They could go and make windows more stable but then again the new software is the one useualy causing the problems.
“But all the cool things in Vista exsist in Linux a long while back why bring them out only now?”
Two reasones:
1. Marketing – you can’t blame them for that they do have a brain when it comes to marketing…
2. The avrage computer idiot wasn’t ready for it. Until windows 95 when you bought a “MS Mouse” it came with the how to use a mouse tutorial and a windows tutorial like windows 3.0/3.1/3.11 – which wasn’t a bad idea – actualy saving me alot of trouble with explaning to idiot #1: “This is a mouse, its like a gun you. point and shoot”. These days anyone who can’t use a mouse is considered a caveman.
What I am trying to say is “HEY LINUX USERS COOL IT, WE ALL THINK THAT YOU ARE WOUNDERFUL AND BLA BLA, KEEP IT TO YOUR SELF!!!”
Have you got any idea how meny people keep trashing Windows? and why? Because they just don’t understand it well enough.
Now this post is long enough so I’ll cut it.
July 18th, 2007 at 12:22 pm
for all those “What about Windows ME?” comments….
There is no real point to adding it due to it’s near identical appearance to 98 – since it was a bastardised version of 98 which the only differences was some apparently improved stability support and renamed features and some extra media player features.
Win ME in my opinion is more like a “nothing to see here… move along…” roadkill accident. My girlfrined’s PC had ME on it when I met her – I reinstalled it with 98 to make things more useable!
And for my windows bashing: At this point I refuse to touch Vista and sticking with XP due to the headaches that I hear from users in my tech support job. I’d migrate everything to linux if I could but haven’t had the time to start the process, biggest setback is compatiability with my favourite games/programs – even XP can’t run some of them!
July 18th, 2007 at 12:32 pm
Hey Alon,
have you been under a rock last couple of years?
“Have you got any idea how meny people keep trashing Windows? and why? Because they just don’t understand it well enough.” you said.
People don’t need to understand it, using it is enough!
I don’t need to understand my car, I just drive it. And I like to drive it, btw.
Linux users does’nt need to say Linux is cool. Is M$ who spent lots of thousands of bucks to say to the world their crap is good. And you pay for this sh*t and ever rejoice, hum?!
July 18th, 2007 at 2:50 pm
Why don’t you all just BOB up and down on ME!
July 18th, 2007 at 5:38 pm
I agree…What a bunch of extremeists. The world wouldn’t run on Windows if something was better for the masses. For power users – go for Linux, of course. But come on, we’re talking about the general public here – a bunch of people like Mom & Dad who are quite possibly scared of computers in general. Windows is for the masses, Linux is for the folks who want to control the details & behind-the-scenes. Stop slamming Windows because YOU think it’s silly. You don’t hear people slamming Linux, because (most of) the people that use it are intelligent and mature about it… realizing that if they don’t want to use Windows, they won’t. Take a hint.
July 18th, 2007 at 8:12 pm
Hey Alon, you are a bitch. You don’t know shit what you are talking about.
Antivirus on linux? Of course we ain’t gonna do that. It’s not necessary!!!!!!!!!!!!!
July 19th, 2007 at 3:36 am

July 19th, 2007 at 1:43 pm
Ok, now all of us can see that no particular changes and improvements have been done from Win 95 to Vista… so, what the amount of disk space required is for?
P.S. the media player effects included in the screenshots don’t make it more beautiful…
July 19th, 2007 at 4:10 pm
Hey, “Damn”, you are full of shit. Why do you think people write viruses for Windows? Because 97% of people use it. If Linux ever completly takes over the desktop market, like you cunts predict it will every year, Do you think virii writers will ignore that? No they will write spyware, spamware, viruses, et c. for Linux and other crap. Then what will you do if you won’t run an antivirus? Hope that the kernel gets updated every hour to bar hole and create diferent ones?

Hello. I just “Stumble!ed” upon this page. I spend more than a bit of time on my computer. Should try and fix that. But I digress. My usual plan of attack with Windows on my computer is to install it. Then I install my other programs. Then I don’t fiddle, I don’t put stupid little freeware or shareware programs on it and I get on with what I’m doing. All is then well. Thanks for the article.

August 3rd, 2007 at 7:19 pm
ummmm ppl windows ME was shitty anyways most likly the reason why is because while taking the screen shot (since microsoft monitors everything ppl do on windows M.E) they probably wiped the harddrive before he could post it bastards at microsoft but also wtf some of you people put what about windows ME and millenium edition are the same thing….. another reason he might not have taken screenshots of it is probably because he sat down to a computer with ME on it and probably figured f*** this i really dont feel like messing with this piece of s***. and walked away i mean really freakin MS DOS was better.
August 4th, 2007 at 7:52 pm
Windows ME was a welcomed ommission. I must say that Microsoft has taken huge steps in the ‘eye candy’ department with WIndows Vista.
August 6th, 2007 at 8:39 pm
@Tyler:
Horrible typing skillz for the win! And no, Microsoft -can’t- wipe the hard drive from Redmond, even if it’s ME. I do agree to that ‘fuck it’ comment though, ME isn’t something you seriously use.
@Wasatch Software:
I couldn’t agree more. I use Windows Vista Business and Ultimate. No problems. No driver issues, and I have the full Aero experience. I have used Macs before, and I prefer Windows.
@Everyone else:
Enough with the rabid Linux fanboyism and no more “Where’s Windows ME?!”.

in my opinion… i have worked with 3.1, nt workstation, 95, 98, xp home and pro, and vista home premium…. i would have to say 95 is most stable windows …. but then 98 is second to that … 98 would be the best.. because it is the absolute minimum for what a computer user nowadays should have… it was pretty stable… except… most times.. bsod happens.. just fucking restart the comp.. or insert a windows recovery disk for gods sake… 98 is hard
